After many
days
weeks
months
of hard work primer is finally on the F
irebird body.
There are a few areas which require a bit more work but hey that’s what this primer is for anyways. I was also juuust a bit short on the amount I ordered from the painter (1L) so I need some more to fill in a few areas which there wasn’t enough to cover so no big deal.
Floor and firewall will be pained black this weekend and then real paint will be laid on beginning of next week if everything goes according to plan.
Which brings me to my next problem, which color should I choose?? It’s been yellow before (which I like) but I feel like I kinda have to paint it something else this time since all of the remaining yellow will be gone once I’m done.

I was always partial to white with a blue chicken on the hood....

Cool!
Is this etch or epoxy primer?

I like going with an improved version of the original color. Like my Camaro was originally gold but somebody in the past painted it red. I’d like to bring it back to gold using a modern version that has more depth and richness than the original placer gold.

But it feels like such a “nice” color! This is not a nice car, this is a ba dass death trap looking to murder you and your family at first chance.

I guess the correct term would be etch since it adds a layer which fills in small holes and such and is then meant to be sanded some before paint.

That’s primer surfacer. Did you use anything else before that? Is the stuff you used a DTM?

What about silver?

Something with more yellow in it would probably look great. The one you posted has that 70's earth tone harvest gold thing going.

Yeah but how do you improve on yellow?!

What is the original color? Red and yellow will be the most expensive. Black is difficult to get flawless. What type of build will this be? Stock appearing? Pro-touring? I’d say go with an original factory color if you’re going for a stock look. Otherwise go loud for Pro-Touring. Find a deep purple. Definitely don’t see many purple Firebirds.

On the places were there was bare metal i put something else under it to make it stick (don’t know the English name of it). However most of the car consisted of the old paint which had just been sanded down.
No idea what a DTM is, sorry!

I would personally do something a little wild or different since you are going through this much work. Buuut, yellow
is always a good color. I’m also a fan of deep purples, greens of all flavors, oranges, bright blues, etc. Black, white, and silvers are wayy too boring. Why go through this much effort for something boring ;)

Sorry, DTM means direct to metal.
Some primers are made to go directly over metal (that’s in the proper grit finish) and they offer corrosion protection.
Other primers are made to go over some other primer or properly scuffed finish.
Didn’t know yours was a scuff. As long as the original paint is finished in the right grit it’s no big deal. Happy sanding!

Original color would have been yellow. Car has been repainted many times but never in any different color, just different nuances.
It’s absolute
l
y not a stock build but it’s no full on pro-touring
either as I try to keep it “as if” it could have been build in the 70's. So 15" wheels with fat tires and the air cleaner sticking up through the hood is still staying.

Right?! I want this car to be both seen and heard when I show up. Don’t think I could pull of a purple but a green I could definitely see myself doing.

Harvest gold describes it perfectly. That picture pretty well represents the original color, though the stripes are strangely wrong, and it is pure ‘70 harvest gold.

Soooo, dirty red then?
Or yellow but with strips:

Was yellow from the factory? If it was I’d stick with that yellow as it’s pretty bitchin’ but if you do want to change it maybe go blue?

If you want to both be seen and be 70's custom, metal flake. Gold, preferably, perhaps with slatherings of orange and b rown throughout.
It should sparkle like the bottom of a bass boat.

No worries! I guess a DTM is what I laid on the firewall, which was bare metal. I have this local professional painter which I buy the paint from and he’s great since he tells me exactly what I need to do for the job I’m doing.
As soon as everything’s dry tomorrow I’ll get back to the sanding

Cool!
And one last thing, if you decide to go with a metallic paint job, just know that it might be best for you to paint the car assembled vs. in pieces. Solid color it’s probably OK to do apart.
Keep posting pics!

Yeah but it would have been a pretty bleak yellow so not very nice IMO
Also r eally don’t like blue, sorry! :(
Also also! the picture you posted seem to be from another Swedish car which seem to be posing in front of Göta Canal which is one of the largest man made canals in the world and only 30 min away from where I live.

Stripes might actually not be a bad idea. I have a friend who will basically print out anything I ask them to so maybe I should go for some crazy 70's look?

Oh okay didn’t know that, thanks for the tip! I was originally planning on doing solids and painting everything apart since I still haven’t touched the doors or fenders but if I’m doing metallic I might need to take care of those right now as well.

I meant sticking with the sort of yellow it was in that picture. The factory colors are definitely bleak. Sorry about the blue. I’m not much for white, black, silver, and gray since those are so overdone in new cars. I have a personal dislike of green, other than BRG, on cars but you might like it and a really, really dark green might not be bad .
Evidently Swedes like their Firebirds!

Yeah, it has to do with how the metallic flakes lay down in the paint and how the panels tie together. If you paint adjacent panels from different angles the metallic can look off.

70's style is all the rage... or should be.

Kinda kidding about the flake. It would be very 70's custom, but doing the whole car in it would be way too much and would probably look gaudy.
Now, if it happened to have stripes anywhere in it's plans, or a 2-tone motif where is could be used a bit more sparingly, I'd be in I think.

I’m all for the yellow but I just seems like a waste of doing all this work getting the car down to it’s bare bones and then just ending up painting it the same color again :/
Anything that has classic American written over it is popular in Sweden. I *think* I read somewhere that there are more classic american cars in S weden per capita than in the states. I’m inclined to belie ve that since everyone I know that drives a merican also seem to have at least 2-3 cars in total.

Maybe something similar to the old school Boss mustang?

Maybe works on a Challenger but on the F irebird it just looks a bit too strange for my taste.

Keep it yellow and stick the chicken on the hood.

I’d agree with that. I guess you need a bigger, fatter car with harder corners to make it work. My vote is green!

Reflective metallic silver because I need to be reminded that jumbo jets had an aluminum underbelly that is distinctly 70s.

I was also going to say gold. I’ve seen a brass coloured car before. Was pretty awesome.
